Episode 150: Does Your Leader Have the Clarity to Grow?

Most founders are very good at spotting symptoms.

The team is moving too slowly. Decisions are getting messy. Deadlines are slipping. Profit margins are not where they should be. So, the founder starts looking for the obvious fix.

A better strategy, a new process, the right hires and the right leaders. 

But according to Alicia Rius, founder of Hive - Leadership & Team Coaching and author of Lead With Clarity, many growing companies are solving the wrong problem. They do not have a strategy problem. They have a leadership clarity problem dressed up as one.

Clarity Is the Foundation Everything Else Sits On

In her conversation on The Wealthy Entrepreneur, Alicia explained that strategy, execution and communication all sit on top of clarity. And, while that sounds simple, it is one of the most overlooked realities in a growing business.

When the company is small, clarity often lives inside the founder’s head. The founder knows the clients, the product, the priorities, the values, the decisions that matter and the direction the business is moving in. But the minute a bigger team enters the picture, it starts to break. 

Suddenly, people need to make decisions without the founder in the room. New managers need to lead others. Team members need to understand how their work connects to the bigger picture. Priorities need to be clear enough that people are not building their own version of the company inside the same company.

Without that clarity, the business does not simply become a little inefficient.

It becomes harder to lead, harder to scale, and harder to trust.

The Real Cost of Unclear Leadership

Alicia shares the example of a CEO who believed she had a problem with her direct reports.

On the surface, it looked like a leadership issue. But after looking deeper, the real problem was missing clarity around vision, strategy, values, priorities and ways of working.

Everyone was trying to do the right thing, but they were not working from the same foundation. That is how waste begins. 

The real question to ask is: does everyone know what they own, where they are going and how they are expected to work together?

If not, no tool or process will fully fix it.

The Doer-to-Leader Shift

One of the most human parts of Alicia’s message is that leadership development has to start with identity. When someone is an individual contributor, their value is usually obvious. A developer knows their job, a designer knows theirs and so on and so forth. 

But when that person becomes a leader, the job changes.

Their value is no longer in doing the work directly, but rather in helping others do the work well. That is a difficult shift because it asks people to let go of the very thing that made them successful in the first place.

The Founder’s Paradox

Alicia offers one of the sharpest reminders of the episode:

You are the person who made it happen, but you can also be the person who makes it fall apart.

And, that is just the reality of growth - the same traits that helped a founder build the business can limit the business if they do not evolve. Control, speed, deep involvement and personal expertise are useful early on. But in the growth stage, the business needs trust, structure, communication and shared clarity.

The next level of growth does not just require better systems.

It requires a different version of the founder.

Start With the Clarity Gap

Before blaming the strategy, the people, the process, or the market, Alicia recommends asking a simpler question:

Where is clarity missing?

That question can reveal more than any meeting, hire or software tool.

Because once clarity improves, everything else has a better chance of working: accountability, productivity, communication, culture, profitability, and leadership.
