Episode 151: Your Expertise Won’t Build Your Business
Aug 11, 2026Most consultants start with expertise.
They know their field. They have solved real problems. They have experience, credibility and a track record. In many cases, that expertise is exactly what gave them the confidence to leave a job, start a firm, or build something of their own.
But expertise alone does not create a business.
Clients do.
That is the point Michael Zipursky, co-founder of Consulting Success, makes in his conversation on the latest episode of The Wealthy Entrepreneur. You can be excellent at what you do, but if the right people do not know what you do or do not understand it in a way that connects to their problem, your expertise stays invisible.
And invisible expertise does not generate revenue.
Marketing Is Not the Enemy
For many consultants, marketing feels uncomfortable.
It can feel like self-promotion, salesy and like something you are doing to someone rather than something you are doing for them.
Michael offers a total reframe: If you genuinely know you can help someone, then letting them know is not selfish. It is useful.
There may be a business owner, executive or team struggling with a problem you are well equipped to solve. If you stay silent because marketing feels uncomfortable, they may never know there is a better way forward.
Marketing, when done properly, is service. Not imposition.
Focus Makes the Message Stronger
One of the biggest traps for consultants is trying to serve everyone.
It feels safer to stay broad. More industries, more services, more possible clients. But in reality, broadness often makes the message weaker.
When you are a smaller business, focus is usually your friend.
Michael’s advice is to get clear on who you can serve best:
- Where do you have the most experience?
- Who do you understand deeply?
- Which clients can you get the strongest results for?
- Where do you already have access or credibility?
Those answers matter because marketing only works when the message feels relevant.
And, specialization makes your value easier to recognize.
Consistency Beats Constant Experimentation
Another common mistake is treating marketing like a series of short experiments.
First, you try LinkedIn for a few weeks. Then send a few emails. Then attend an event or post some content. And, finally, you decide none of it works.
But as Michael explains, real lead flow comes from consistency.
Whether it’s speaking, writing, a podcast or relationship building, no channel is universally better than the others. The right channel is simply where your strengths overlap with where your ideal clients actually spend time.
If you hate the medium, you will avoid it. If your market is not there, your effort will not land. But when your strengths and your market overlap, consistency becomes easier, and the results have a chance to compound.
Design a Business That Supports YOU
Growth is not automatically good.
If your pricing is weak, more clients may just create more work. If everything depends on the founder, hiring more people may only create more complexity. If the business model does not support the life you want, more revenue may still leave you exhausted.
This is why Michael encourages consultants to think carefully before scaling.
Do not just ask how to grow. Ask what kind of business you are growing.
One of his strongest ideas is to invert the lifestyle triangle. Most people put the business at the top and force their life to fit underneath it. Michael suggests doing the opposite.
Define what success looks like in your actual life. Then design the business around that.
That may shape your pricing, clients, hours, offers, team and delivery model.
And, that’s okay because at the end of the day, the goal is not just to build a bigger business.
It is to build one worth having.
